Avoiding Infections

Ear infections are extremely common, earaches if not treated can become a serious problem, but with this guide you will be able to prevent any opportunity for an infection to manifest.

Removing ear wax

A build up of wax can cause an infection, but the good thing is there are many ways that you can remove this excess of wax. Some say warm oil (baby, olive or mineral) can help soften the wax, however this is not the quickest or easiest as you will have to lay on your side when applying a few drops (making sure that the temperature of the oil isn’t too hot) leave for a few seconds then lean your head to the other side to allow the liquid to flow out.  However, eardrops have been proven to be the safest and quickest way to remove earwax as it can help reduce the build up of wax by softening and liquefying it for easy removal.

Protecting your children

Children can be prone to a lot of infections, such as glue ear or swimmers ear. Glue ear is caused when the middle ear is filled with a glue-like substance instead of air, which causes an infection, whereas swimmers ear is caused when a child spends too much time in the water and is visible in the ear canal and outer ear. There are a few factors that can cause ear effects such as:

•    Being exposed to a family member who smokes
•    Laying down whilst drinking a bottle
•    Being exposed to a family member who has suffered from a lot of ear infections
•    Being around a lot of children, as their immune systems are not as strong as an adults, being subjected to a child with an infection could set one off for them as well.

Infection: Swimmers Ear

Swimmers ear is also known as Otitis externa, which is a painful infection, largely caused when getting water inside your ear.  It is a visible infection as it inflames the outer ear and the ear canal making the surrounding skin swell.

Swimming is a great form of exercise, but spending too much time in the water, you could run the risk of infection. Using ear plugs for swimmers to protect your ears from infections such as swimmers ear can be the simplest solution. Ear plugs will also mould to the shape of your ear to ensure a custom fit and preventing water from getting into your ear canal.

This is a common infection found with children, especially in the summer months as they tend to spend a fair amount of time in the water. Swimmers ear has been a huge concern from parents across the country when they know their children spend a lot of time in the pool, but you don’t need to stop them from going into the pool just on the chance they could get the infection. A simpler and more stress free option is to use ear plugs for children. Ear plugs will help prevent water entering the ear canal and causing an infection as they are designed to mould to the shape of their ear.
