Summer holiday earplugs

Summer is finally here; if you haven’t already booked a holiday, now could be the time to find that illusive deal. With plenty of opportunities to let go while away, remember to take care of your ears, particularly if you are flying or enjoy a dip in the sea.

Airplane take-offs can be particularly painful for some travellers; the ears can have trouble equalizing the air pressure change between the cabin atmosphere and inner ear.

Barotrauma is a particularly uncomfortable condition, causing inner ear pain or a sensation that your ears are stuffed or need to “pop". More severe signs include extreme pain in the ear, dizziness, blood or fluid coming from the ear or hearing loss.

Using earplugs will help to reduce the severity of this condition, alleviating the symptoms experienced during take-off and landing. Alpine’s FlyFit earplugs are an excellent value solution, successfully equalising cabin pressure and reducing the likelihood of experiencing pain. For younger children, try Cirrus Healthcare Children's Earplanes.

If you are more concerned with getting a good night sleep and avoiding jet lag, Mack's Ultra Safe Sound Earplugs will effectively block out engine and cabin noise, with a noise reduction rating of 32 decibels.

Swimming and water sports

Swimming is one of the most popular holiday pastimes, and ear infections are subsequently one of the most common health complaints of travellers.

Swimming in contaminated water can lead to particularly painful bacterial ear infections; left untreated this can lead to fever which can take several days to recover from; not an ideal way to spend your precious time away from work.

Wearing earplugs can provide a seal against infection and also prevent water from getting into your ears; this can be particularly annoying, particularly if it doesn’t clear overnight and requires syringing.

For the swimming professional, try ProGuard Custom Swimmers Earplugs; this high value solution will not shrink or harden and will float in the water in case of becoming dislodged.

For a good quality, lower cost solution, try Alpine SwimSafe Earplugs, which allow you to cut them to size to fit the contours of your ears.

For young children try Hello Kitty Ultra Soft Ear Plugs, which come in a handy carry case and have a noise reduction rating of 22dB.

Clubbing and festivals

For the younger adults, holidays can often involve a lot of time spent in busy bars and nightclubs, particularly clubbing destinations like Ibiza, Magaluf or Ayia Napa. It is important here that you take steps to protect your hearing.

If you are spending a lot of time on the dance floor, where noise levels can reach around 110db, safe for less than five minutes, it is recommended that you invest in a good set of earplugs.

Ear Peace High Fidelity Earplugs are a good value solution and come in an aluminium carry case which can be attached to a key ring and provide a noise reduction of 17dB; ProGuard Lin-Ear PR20 Earplugs are also another a clubber friendly solution.

Make sure you think ahead; you don’t want to look back on a holiday with bad memories, an ear infection really can put the mockers on an enjoyable break.
