Celebrities with tinnitus

Music is a funny thing; it can strike a powerful cord with your listener’s emotions, introduce them to something new and create an unbreakable bond. There are many benefits to being a musician – just by witnessing the reactions of the crowd and seeing how they respond and engage with you is one highlight. However, the music that you produce could damage your hearing and potentially end your aspiring career if the necessary hearing protection isn’t worn. Don’t believe us? There are quite a few aren’t there, and that sadly isn’t all of them. Unfortunately there isn’t a cure for tinnitus, which makes prevention key to a blossoming musical career. Many celebrities have teamed up with charities to spread awareness and encourage not only musicians, but fans as well, to do their utmost to protect their ears.

Chris Martin, Gary Numan and Plan B have come together to back Action on Hearing Losswith many of them giving a detailed account of their views on hearing protection. Chris Martin has been suffering from tinnitus for over a decade and has admitted it nearly cost him his career. Through his experience he now urges everyone to look after their hearing whether they are performing or in the crowd: “Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don’t think about until there’s a problem.

“I’ve had tinnitus for about ten years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn’t got any worse – touch wood.

“But I wish I’d thought about it earlier.

“Now [the band] always use molded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try to protect our ears.

“You can use industrial headphones, but that looks strange at a party.”
