How to care for your ear plugs

Ear plugs play a vital part when protecting your hearing and so demand to be cared for. However, ear plugs need to be properly cared for. It is simple to clean your ear plugs and should become part of everyday routine. When using ear plugs it is also important to make sure your ears are clean as dirty ears can compromise the effect the ear plugs have.

Ear plugs can been seen as an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle now that connections have been made between hearing loss and chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and chronic kidney disease. It’s known that 10 million Brits suffer from a form of hearing loss, but this statistic is expected to rise to 14.5 million by 2031 making prevention imperative.

There are many kinds of ear plugs available suitable for a variety of situations and preferences. If you like the convenience of throwing used items away, such as contact lenses then disposable or single use ear plugs are the choice for you. However, if you like knowing that you always have a pair of ear plugs with you that can be used whenever they are needed, then re-usable ear plugs are perfect for you. Below you will find information about how to properly care for your ear plugs.

Disposable ear plugs

    • Single use or disposable ear plugs should not be washed and reused and should be disposed after one use

Reuasble ear plugs

      • Fill a bowl with warm water and use a soap, (dish soap can be used) and leave the ear plugs for a few minutes in the soapy water to soak.

      • With your fingers or if preferred a tooth brush remove all dirt and ear wax from the plugs.

      • Once all matter is removed, rinse the ear plugs with cold water and leave to air dry to discourage any bacteria.

      • When not in use it is advised to store your ear plugs in a case, this keeps your ear plugs from any unwanted bacteria or fungi.

      • If you want to disinfect the ear plugs, spray them with alcohol and leave to air dry.

      • Do not wash silicone putty or soft wax ear plugs.

      • Multiple use ear plugs can last approximately 2-4 weeks, depending on care.

There are many reasons why you should carry ear plugs with you at all times and we advise that if there is an occasion where this sound could escalate, such as city traffic, then you should wear ear plugs.

The considered level of sound that is safe for people to hear without the use of ear plugs is measured at 85dB. However, with a lawnmower being able to reach noise levels of 90dB and an underground station known to reach noise levels of 88dB, damaging your hearing can be extremely easy.
